Shane Watson announced his retirement from all forms of cricket

Former Australia all-rounder  Shane Watson  has called time on his IPL playing career. The Chennai Super Kings management confirmed to Cricbuzz that the two-time MVP announced his decision to his teammates and the Chennai Super Kings franchise after the team's final IPL 2020 fixture against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday (October 1).

The decision brings the curtains down on a glittering IPL career, one that saw him lift two titles, in 2008 (RR) and 2018 (CSK) and two player of the tournament awards (2008 and 2013). In all, Watson played 145 games for three teams in the competition, scoring 3874 runs at a strike-rate of 137.91. He hit four centuries and also claimed a hat-trick amongst his 92 IPL wickets. The 39-year-old has also captained both Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Watson was also a man for the big occasion in the tournament. In the inaugural season, he smashed a 29-ball 52 and then claimed 3 for 10 in the semi final win against Delhi Daredevils. His 472 runs and 17 wickets in the Royals' title-winning season brought a fillip to his international career, which he retired from in 2016.

After two lukewarm seasons with RCB, Watson was signed for INR 4 crore by the returning CSK ahead of the 2018 season. Moving back to the top of the batting order, Watson hit 555 runs, including a memorable century in the final against SRH. He almost repeated his final heroics in 2019, smashing a 59-ball 80 before getting run-out in the final over as CSK lost to Mumbai Indians by a run.

His final season mirrored that of his franchise. He finished with 299 runs from 11 games as CSK failed to qualify for the Playoffs for the first time in the 11 seasons they've competed in. It remains to be seen if Watson will transition into a coaching or mentoring role in forthcoming seasons of IPL.
